This is the final sermon in our 11 week study of Philippians.  We close our in-depth look at the book with an incredible challenge to learn contentment.  We center on 3 core practices that will help us "learn by doing":
Be Thankful.
Abide in Christ.
Rehearse Core Convictions.

This week we will look at Philippians 4:10, 15-20 and focus on a few insights Paul shares about generosity.  This time of year, people become more sensitive to opportunities to be generous.  But more than a seasonal tug, Scripture gives us a calling to practice intentional generosity. Like an interest bearing account, there are compounded blessings when we are willing to seize opportunities for being generous.

As we move into the home stretch of the series, we look at verses 4:2-9.  Here the Apostle Paul throws a number of ingredients together to create a soup of items needed for navigating life’s changes.  He lumps together a wide range of things like peace, prayer, joy, dependability, being honorable, etc.  There’s at least 13 different characteristics highlighted. Rather than drill down on any one of these, our objective will be to focus on a game plan of action for how we might practice and work on any of one them.  Paul says, “keep putting into practice…” – that’s our goal.  Increase our capacity to be “doers of the Word.”

This week we turn the corner in our Philippians series into chapter 3 and begin the second half of the study.  3:1-11 is recognized by New Testament scholars as one of Paul’s highest compositions – one that clarifies the nature of salvation as a transaction by faith in what God has done for us.  As Paul traces his salvation journey, he reconsiders so many things he once valued and pursued. From where he now stands…he counts those things as losses.  BUT they are losses that yielded a greater gain – knowing Christ.  To apply Paul’s reflections, will put our focus on seeing how Christ is able to take some of our losses in life, and along with our faith steps, turn those into wins.

This week we take a look at 2:12-30.  We are going to focus on one of the biggest “tells” that reveals if we are working out our salvation and becoming more Christlike.  In verse 14 Paul elevates a sign of “Jesusly” action: “do everything without complaining.” Most of us can do something without a complaint, but everything is a whole other ballgame.  How can we hope to see that level of progress in our spiritual development?

In this week’s Philippians installment we are mining 2:1-11.  This passage contains another highly memorable section of Scripture (Philippians has several). Verses 6-8 are sometimes called the “kenosis” (emptied Himself) by theologians which relates to the significance of incarnation – Jesus becoming human and laying down divine privileges.  The glory of what is described has often blinded Bible students to the simplicity of what the Apostle Paul was presenting, the remarkable fact that Jesus humbled Himself to put others first.  That is our lesson for this weekend – to become others first followers of Jesus!

Everyone faces dilemmas.  Whether it\'s a perplexing situation, or a circumstance that calls for a difficult decision between two or more options... we all have to navigate these moments from time to time.  This week Paul gives us some direction in how to navigate dilemmas well.

We continue our journey through Philippians exploring 1:12-18.  When life takes some unexpected turns often one of the first casualties is our joy.  Jesus specifically said that He wanted to give us His joy and as a result our joy would be full and remain.  But too often we lose our joy or it gets stolen!  In these verses Paul rehearses some things that helped him to “continue rejoicing.”  Learning from the Apostle, we’ll direct our attention toward three things to help us renew our joy: divine perspective in what’s happened, seeing Christ in our chains (hard situations that don’t seem to be going away), and living our own life – you do you - so no comparisons, jealousy or trying to measure up.

This week we’ll look at verses 3-11 and enjoy a front row seat as Paul describes the joy that stirs in him as he reflects on the partnership he has with the Philippian church. We also get a peek into how personal the letter is as we get to almost eavesdrop on a prayer he prays over them.  We need deeply rooted, spiritually charged, and Gospel-prioritizing partners as we navigate life’s twists and turns.  We have the opportunity to be this kind of life-giving partner to those God directs into our paths.

This week we officially begin our study of Philippians.  The overall theme of the series is to look at some of the various topics that Paul mentions as a resource when life takes some of its unexpected twists.  We’ll start this week by taking a closer look at Paul’s familiar salutation used in most of his letters.  Even though we are tempted to read past it in order to get to the “meat” of the letter, there is something deeply important in what he says and the presence of the things he mentions is quite essential for life’s unexpected turns.

In the book of Philippians Paul describes their church in a way that shows how much affection and confidence he had in them.  Many theologians think this church was his favorite.  As you read through Paul’s encounter at Philippi, we come across several “reveals” that give us some of the background for what shaped the faith and joy of this body of believers.  This week we highlight a few of these and welcome the Lord’s work in our hearts to shape us by some of the same encounters and convictions.
