We’ll conclude our series with a focus on the “as-you-go” approach to a making disciples.  This is a far more accessible expression of mission.  We want to grow in our capacity to catch God’s vision of extending His Kingdom, His order, His way into places that need change.  We’ll look at a very interesting expression of that from Paul’s life (Acts 19) and feel a bold challenge to make a mission shift to bring change in the everyday places and spaces of our lives.

Our Discipleshift study takes us to the “going” part of Jesus’ commission to make disciples.  This initiates what might be the biggest shift many of us have to make.  We appreciate the clarity of our identity and the call to grow and mature in Christlikeness – but the thought of being on mission makes us sweat.  We are much more comfortable with the notion of consumeristic Christianity: help me, support me, bless me.  We are a lot less comfortable being on the front edge to lead change in the lives of others.

Our shift this week is to better grasp our responsibility in our progress toward maturity and life change.  Disciples aren’t born “show room ready” – they are made.  And we all have lots of changes to make.  We need to be honest with ourselves about where we are in our spiritual growth and own our responsibility to mature and change.  In a recent study conducted in thousands of churches (across all denominational lines and all parts of the world), it was determined that people who experience the greatest levels of spiritual growth are people who take ownership and responsibility for their own growth.  In other words, no matter what pathways and processes churches offered, the biggest determining factor of whether someone experienced change and maturity is if they chose to.  As a leadership team at TPCC, we want to make way for effective, convenient opportunities for more and more disciples to be discipled – but to grow, people have to own their own growth.

We continue our Discipleshift series this week and our target is to gain understanding behind the “teaching them” part of Jesus’ commission to make disciples.  We are calling it “a disciple’s progress.”  Having brought attention to how “baptizing” disicples affirms the fact that we have been changed, now we’ll turn attention to our obligation to keep changing.  When disciples follow Jesus, we make a life-long commitment to experience transformation.  Sometimes those changes are drastic and happen in a moment, but often they are the result of small steps over time. One step we want to encourage our faith family to take over the next few weeks is a group step.  One of the most effective environments we can create for personal change is a smaller circle of believers who are gathered to grow and encourage one another.

This week we continue our study of Jesus’ commission about “baptizing” disciples.  Water baptism identifies disciples with a change that has happened in each of them.  The symbolic gesture demonstrates the truth of being dead in sin, and celebrates the new life that has begun.  In baptism we identify that Jesus has changed us: “anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person” (2 Corinthians 5:17).  Our DNA hasn’t been altered, our character hasn’t been completely reformatted... but it is certain that Jesus has really changed something about us.  Over and over in the New Testament we are reminded of this core change.  And, one of the more important discipleshifts we learn to make is to more consistently identify with this certainty: I am changed. As Paul directed disciples: “let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature…” (Ephesians 4:23-24)

One aspect of expressing our changed life comes through baptism.  In this sermon we take some time to highlight some of the specific things symbolized and practiced in baptism.  Our hope is to create clarity and easy on-ramps for people who are on the verge of taking that step in their faith journey with Jesus.
